Old Colour Map of West London, 1891- Fulham, Brompton, Battersea, Hammersmith - SW6, SW10, SW15, SW18, SW10, SW11, SW5, W6 W14
Originally hailed as "the most perfect map of London that has ever been issued" by the Royal Geographical Society when it was published in 1862, it's safe to say that Edward's Stanford's library map of London was a masterpiece of cartography. This here is a beautifully handcoloured map from the 1891 edition of Stanford's map.
The map was originally published in 24 sheets. Altogether the map would've measured about 2 metres wide (78 inches). This here is sheet 13, which focuses on West London, specifically Fulham and West Brompton, with bits of Hammersmith, Chelsea, Battersea and Putney.
On this map you can clearly see: Hammersmith Bridge, Putney Bridge, Battersea Reach, Fulham Palace, Parsons Green, Walham Green, West London Cemetery (now Brompton Cemetery), West Brompton, Old Brompton, bits of western Chelsea, and lots and lots of fields that are now Hurlingham and Imperial Wharf!
This map looks great at all sizes: 12x16 inches (31x41cm), 18x24 inches (45.5x61cm), and 24x30 inches (61x76cm), but it looks even better when printed large.
I can create beautiful, large prints of this map up to 80 inches (200cm) wide. Please get in touch if you're looking for larger, customised or different framing options.
The model in the listing images is holding the 18x24 inches (45.5x61cm) version of this map.
The fifth listing image shows an example of my map personalisation service.
I also have this same map, but in its original monochrome form. Depending on your room’s aesthetic/decor, you might prefer this version.
Please take a look at the listing images for the street where you grew up, or the location of your office - there's a wonderful amount of detail in this map. You can always message me to ask if a certain street or landmark is visible on the map.
This would make a wonderful gift for someone from this part of London or who has West London in their heart!
This map is available as a giclée print on acid free archival matte paper, or you can buy it framed. The frame is a nice, simple black frame that suits most aesthetics. Please get in touch if you'd like a different frame colour or material. My frames are glazed with super-clear museum-grade acrylic (perspex/acrylite), which is significantly less reflective than glass, safer, and will always arrive in perfect condition.
